Are you more honest than a banker? : The Truth About Dishonesty

This is very interesting and fun to watch.

Are you more honest than a banker? Under what circumstances would you lie, or cheat, and what effect does your deception have on society at large? Dan Ariely, one of the world's leading voices on human motivation and behaviour is the latest big thinker to get the RSA Animate treatment.

News report "Church: banking corrupts the good" with ref to CofE submission to Banking Inquiry - An article in the UK Sunday Times yesterday mentioned the concerns of the Church of England - that the Banking and Financial world was having having a bad effect on young Christians and it wanted to discourage them from becoming involved  in this environment .

So don't be a politician or a banker or a salesman or anything that involves talking and money  - what's left :-))

That a very interesting comment Lisa - backed up the the Church of England - and that phrase a "debased mind" is typical religious "speak" - don't these guys realise though that the Bible contains so many incorrect facts and statements that have been "tweaked " with over the centuries that it too has lost its credibility

@Gissa : Thanks and fair comment.

"As long as we cheat just a little bit we can benefit from cheating just a little bit and at the same time we can keep thinking of ourselves as honest wonderful people it’s all about rationalisation, if we can rationalise things to a higher degree we’ll be able to cheat more, or be more dishonest and think of ourselves as good people and if we can rationalise less we would be more honest."

It’s tough getting to the top but it helps if you cheat just a little bit, once you are at the top it’s even tougher staying there, but it helps if you cheat just a little bit, don’t you just love ‘our flexible cognitive’ psychology.

All's fair in love and war and trading and educating, please don't shoot or glass the messenger, Dan Ariely is one of the world's leading voices on human motivation and behaviour, I think he know's what he's talking about don't YOU ? so just relax and learn to laugh a little . . . .

Think I need a drink, whiskey anyone ?

How many of us traders cheat a little and bend the rules of our trading strategy?  .... and end up in a losing trade!

Hi Keith - the trouble is - none of us are perfect. The problem starts if you think you are ;-)

How many times has the wife said to you - "does my bum look big in this tight dress?" and you have answered 100% truthfully?

And then when you are sitting in the tax office with your accountant and the inspector says have you got any bank accounts in Switzerland or the Cayman Islands - and you say 100% NO - thinking well he has not mentioned Jersey or Monaco - so I am being honest.

Its great though when you get stopped for a minor traffic offence and the officer says - "have you had a drink tonight ? and you say  yes 3 bottles and he says take a breath test.

When he is amazed at a zero reading  - you can then say - yes 2 cokes and 1 fanta orange

You have just mislead and cheated him - but you have done nothing wrong :-))

But then you are under "the eye" - and next time - you will be caught out good and proper

No I am not driving tonight so it's a brandy for me  ( lol)

Morning Keith - yes watched David Blaine due it as well on a swimming pool and on a lake. - Yes and know how they do it - its very clever - and they cheat lol

I watched the RSA animate video again this morning -whilst having my brekkie - and my conclusion is the  author is not telling us all the truth.

But then would he ?

Lol Peter, everyone's cheating just a little bit ! re David Blaine, I remember watching this CLASSIC interview he did with Eamonn Holmes a few years back.

Re Cheating : if truth be told we all cheat a little bit, sad thing is we probably mostly cheat ourselves (just a little bit).

If you are directly benefiting from just a little bit of cheating, then be under no illusion, you are an accessory (just a little one)  and it does not matter how many times you go to church to confess or how much 'charity' you do, the fact remains.

Time to get the violin out, look its playing by it's self, just a little bit of cheating going on me thinks :)
