10 Things That Will Fuck Up Your Business
By Howard Turner
If you're about to set up a business there are a number of things you need to know if you don't want to end up standing around a burning oil drum under the flyover and teling everyone about the great business you had.
You
You will be the main thing that fucks up your business, because until you get partners, then you are totally responsible for the decisions that will ultimately determine success or failure. No pressure. Harry S Truman had a sign on his desk that said “ The buck stops here”. I have that sign on my desk and I suggest you get one as well. The quicker you realise that the business is down to you and you alone the better. Take complete responsibility, work hard, focus and crack on. There are very few shoulders to cry on and remember – no one else really gives a fuck about you or your business.

Comment by Peter jcp on August 23, 2012 at 9:56pm Hi Francesc - I am actually amazed with this post ;-)
First of all no problems with the contents on how you might fail etc etc - and some good advice etc. I have been there is the past and got the "t shirt" and had the glory and the headaches .
However in the UK you would never have an article like this appear in the FT or the Economist - simply due to that - "one word".
Personally I have no problem with bad language or bad swearing in the appropriate places etc- but to feature it in the "title" has meant to me that its just a "gutter press" article
Please don't take me the wrong way ;-)
Its your site and you are able to pick and chose and really comment how you feel. I will also say I think it is a great site and one of the best.
I am not really offended - but you have opened the flood gates for this type of language to appear more in the chat and blogs - and I thought you were condemning it?
I must sound like Chris here - but I am not taking any moral high ground or whatever - and I know some of my trading colleagues will say "what his he on about" - but i suppose it down to our different language cultures.
For example some of our US trading friends have said some words which I and my English mates will laugh at - simple because they have different meaning to us ;-)
Similarly some of my own phrases- make others giggle - such as when I say - "I fancy a buy" - I now know why some guys must look at me differently - even though I am married with 2 children .
I am pleased that Lisa has liked your post - as it shows she is not offended so that's good and if I am the odd one out I will just say sorry ;-0
Finally I just hope we don't get a load of post now taking the "micky" out of me - which seems to be the fashion at the moment. I have got broad enough shoulders so it won't be a problem lol
And with regards to Mr Howard Turner - he would get far more respect and applaud if he changed just one word in that title as far as I am concerned
Regards
Peter
very funny and painfully real. i have run a small business between 1.5 and 4 million for many years and this article hits bang on . the only thing i know is the banks know nothing about small business and the worst time to ask for money is when you need it.
Comment by Francesc Riverola on August 24, 2012 at 9:38am Hi Peter.... yes the article over uses the word "F" and it is not necessary, but I read it and I like it very much as it really nails the main threats for a small business and you can even extrapolate it Forex trading too... but I will try to avoid overdoses of this "F" word in mind :)
Comment by Peter jcp on August 24, 2012 at 9:59am Hi Talisman- yes we have a saying in the UK about banks - they are fine weather friends - they will lend you an umbrello in good weather - but as soon as it rains - they want it back lol
Comment by Peter jcp on August 24, 2012 at 10:03am Hi Francesc - yes - I think if it had been mentioned a couple of times in the article in the appropriate places no problem - but if I showed that article to my 17 yr old daughter who wants to read economics and business studies and go into business - we would both be embarrassed ;-0
I must be showing my age lol
Comment by Scott Hutchinson on September 13, 2012 at 9:01am Hi, I'm "Howard" the author of the article. Peter mentions that I would "have far more respect and applaud if I change the title". From who? I wrote the article in my language for other likeminded people. I Believe it or not there are millions of small business owners who use the f-word (and worse) in their everyday life. I didn't write the article for Forex, I wrote it for Sabotage Times, I think it was brave of Francesc to post it up uncensored. The fact it got so many comments on it's original site applauding it (and only one criticising the language) sort of blows your theory out of the water mate.
Comment by Peter jcp on September 13, 2012 at 10:25am Hi Howard / Scott - who ever you really are ;-)
I am Peter - a UK middle aged guy who can swear like a trooper - but does not like bad language ;-))
There's a time and a place for everything in life - and if you want to use "foul" language through out your "blogs" - Sabotage Times - yes well that sums it up.
For me its just the lowering of standards - and I would say - well how "low" do you want our standards to drop too ?
Over my business life of 25+ years I had lost of dealing with loads of business people both men and woman. Yes we can all swear - in fact we can all urinate - but i don't generally do it in "public" - just because I can.
I personally though the article was very good - content wise - but the "cheap" shock tactic headline would have lost you credibility - and similar many would just think - more crude rubbish and so I wont bother reading it.
We have got the US Presidential Elections - soon millions around the world will tune into the media and will want to watch and hear. I very much doubt the majority would want to hear Mr Obama or Romney using "gutter language" in their speeches - lets just see if they do ;-))
So I think that blows your theory out the water - mate - thankfully you are still in the minority - whether you are in another Decade - well that's another question ?
Regards
Peter
Comment by Jason Justin Macko on September 14, 2012 at 4:11am Overuse of swears can make you appear uneducated, while careful and sparse use of curse words can punctuate the delivery of what you say. Nice.
Comment by Scott Hutchinson on September 14, 2012 at 12:50pm Peter. Your last sentence makes no sense and you have proved nothing. You have based all of your response on your own experiences ("loads of people" how precise) - your original theory that I would get more respect and applaud (?) if I changed the title has been proved wrong by the statistics of the people who commented on the article, on the site for which it was intended (incidentally Sabotage Times gets 700,000 unique visitors per month). You have no evidence to suggest that I get more or less credibility, only your own theory and bias. Finally, it's not up to you to decide whether I've lost credibility or not with my article (thankfully), it's up to the readers. On this ocassion, you are in the minority. Mate.
Comment by Peter jcp on September 14, 2012 at 2:34pm Hi Scott
Ok - lets be precise and go into detail -
NEVER BEFORE IN HUMAN HISTORY has our planet contained so many older people— or such a large percentage of them.
Having checked out the Sabotage Times ( getting more publicity) it is mainly aimed at a younger audience - which is fine - and the bits I read I enjoyed - even the pictures of a giant penis and testicles made out of snow and ice.
Its strapline is classic - "we cannot concentrate - why should you?"
So now we call all visualise the type of people who might read this type of mag - under 40 ( probably under 13 really lol) - trendy - anti establishment - edgy - want something for nothing etc type of clients .
The trouble is most of them don't realise they are so "last year" and probably would never think that the parents were far more rebellious and blase.
However these guys are going to love swearing and anything they think might piss off the older generation - ie over 40's who they might look upon as ancient. So they would think your article was so cool hip and YOLO
Conclusion - your readers might have loved it - but what about the other 99% of the population.
I certainly don't look upon myself as being old - even though I am over 50 - I still am fit - training for a Triathlon, enjoy go-karting, X box / playstation games, sex, travel , rock and roll and quite a lot of my 17yr old Daughter's music including Drake and Plan B.
Regarding my own experiences - I worked for 3 years with Richard Branson after he launched Mates condoms ( yes sex and rock and roll) and then for 6 years with the European division of Pacific Dunlop ( about 20k personal and I had a European business account base with over 150 SMB's. We had a No Swearing policy at the same time it was cool to have a dress down Friday - ( so last year again darling - as my daughter would say)
However for you information there are far more people over 40yrs old than under 13 ( sorry the average mental age of their readship - I am being cruel but its all good fun ) and the older generation - have been there - done it and got the T shirt - so generally not so angry and dont go round swearing to everybody else.

I do think in the next 20 years the standards will go lower - and your children will be effing and blinding and generally people will accept it as the norm.
Its just a shame really - and like I say - so last year.
Finally - as the previous guy mentioned in this blog (Jason) -
Overuse of swears can make you appear uneducated,
Enough said please grow up - you have had enough publicity - and I wish you all the very best whilst you go around swearing your head off
Anyway - your from the UK - have you started trading - if so all the best
Regards and I enjoy this banter
Peter
