To hold or not to hold....

So my question for today is how many people hold trades over the weekend?  If you do hold them how do you handle the risk of a gap?  If you go flat every Friday how do you manage your reentry on Sunday/Monday?  And lastly are there any people who are specifically trading from Friday to Sunday/Monday in hopes of a gap move?  I hope every one has a great weekend.  I will be in Amsterdam, Germany and Prague next week so if any of my Euro friends want to get together for a drink let me…

Is trading Mental or Mathematical?

Posted on February 28, 2013 at 3:46pm 34 Comments

I was discussing this topic with a fellow trader and wondered if I could get some feedback here.  I trade a mathematical system and I have recently automated it so for me and my trading, emotion no longer has anything to do with it.  On the other hand most people do not use automation yet which means they are forced to wrestle with the psychological side.  So my question is this:  Does having a mathematical edge that is automated really alleviate the psychological side of trading?

Hey Derek. With you 100% on the Mathematical approach. Spent a year in MT4 trying to implement my strategies. Didn't have the patience or perhaps the ability to refine them enough to fully automate so I try to trade my strategies manually with as few variables as possible.

I have to say, when I got it together in MT4 there was nothing more satisfying than waking up in the morning to discover your app has identified a pattern, placed your order and taken to your profit all while you're sleeping. Or golfing. Or sailing. Or whatever else it is you'd prefer to be doing while making money :-)

I could not agree more!  And of course since you have created it yourself you will have the confidence to keep going with after a string of losses because you understand what and why it is doing what it is doing.  And the holy grail of trading is of course consistent persistence!   Have a great weekend.
